Alright so today’s mess started when my kitchen shelf literally collapsed. Turns out stacking mismatched cups was a terrible idea who knew? So I decided enough’s enough time to find actual matching sets that fit properly.

The Cup Chaos Begins

First I rummaged through every cupboard grabbing all the random cups I’ve collected over years. Ended up with six totally different ones on the counter. One souvenir mug from Vegas one chipped tea cup that grandma gave me two cheap plastic tumblers and two mystery glasses from god-knows-where.

Started trying to measure them like some kinda scientist with a tape measure. Measured height bottom width top width handle sizes… got annoyed halfway through because none had consistent shapes. That thick Vegas mug? Handle was tiny while the cup itself was massive. Stupid design honestly.

Water Test Mayhem

Decided filling them with water would tell me the “true size”. Big mistake.

  • The Tea Cup Disaster: Poured water gently still spilled everywhere. Holds like three sips max. Useless.
  • Vegas Mug Fiasco: Tried filling to the brim water just dribbled down the side onto my jeans. Soaked.
  • Plastic Tumbler Surprise: Thought it was small turns out it holds more than my cereal bowl. Weird.

Had to wipe the counter twice during this. Water everywhere. Dog thought it was playtime started lapping spills off the floor. Total chaos.

The “Ah-Ha” Moment Sort Of

After cleaning up I just… stared at the cups. Realized I was trying too hard. Who needs exact measurements? Just wanted cups that stack without crashing down. So I tried stacking them empty:

  • Wide Bottom Tumbler: Solid base. Everything kinda fits on it. Felt like finding gold.
  • Skinny Tall Glass: Toppled over immediately. Made the whole stack wobble. No.
  • Handle Problem: Mug handles always snag on other cups. Annoying. Need no-handle cups for bottom layer.

Ended up grouping them like this:

  • Bottom Layer: Big sturdy tumblers no handles
  • Middle Layer: Medium-sized cups & slim glasses
  • Top Layer: Tiny espresso cups & weird narrow glasses

They stacked! Sort of. Leaned a bit left but didn’t collapse. Good enough.

So What Did I Learn?

Don’t overthink cup sizes. Matching sets? Nice if you can afford em’. Usual humans end up with random cups. Just stack by width & stability. Heavy sturdy ones on bottom light tiny ones on top. Forget handles they just mess things up. And seriously? Skip the water test. A dry counter is a happy counter. Found my “perfect fit” by eyeballing it and accepting the wobble. Life’s too short for cup drama.
